Hurricane Ike’s effects on Pensacola Beach
Hurricane Ike is out in the gulf, and will be missing Pensacola Beach completely. But we are seeing very high waves, and the Santa Rosa sound is getting pretty high. These are some pictures I took this morning:
Charlie’s Beach doesn’t look like a beach I’d want to be on today:
This is behind the Boardwalk on Pensacola Beach. There is usually a beach behind it:
You can see the water crashing through the dock behind the big stage:
To get that last shot, I had to run out on the dock while timing and dodging the waves shooting up through the wood:
Forget sea-side dining. How about dining IN the sea?
Some of these scenes were amazing, but this flooding is making a mess in some areas:
As with Hurricane Gustav, the flooding has taken over the picnic area on Pensacola Beach:
Well, I’ve never seen this. Waves actually crashing over the Pensacola Beach Pier!
The pictures I took from under the pier ended up looking like scenes out of an Indiana Jones movie. Check this out:
Run for your life!
These are some of the biggest waves I’ve ever seen out here on the beach:

Awesome pictures. Send them to Fox news. They’ll show them on TV.
That’s awesome, I have lived here since I was 4 years old and I have never seen photo’s of waves like this before.
i don’t live in p’cola anymore but i did for over 40 years. my family owned a small bar/grill on the original boardwalk(where tiffany’s still stands)& i ran that for nearly 17years. it was called the outrigger.
i recall the old wooden fishing pier & the waves from hurricanes came over it on a regular basis(& knocked it down in sections repeatedly). the gulf side pics of yours are what i’d expect even from a drive by hurricane miles away.
however, your sound-side pics are chilling. trust me. the sound side NEVER flooded back in the day. ever. during the 1985 hurricane season, we had several storms come close(the infamously indecisive elena was the main one…TWO island evacuations for ONE storm)& the sound never came up the way it’s doing in your pics for ike.
if you really want to scare yourself off that island, go back & check satillite pics from 20-30 years ago. i’m betting the width of the island has shrunk by 50%. as i’m seeing your pics, the central part of the island(where the man-made median road leading from the toll booths hits the boardwalk-mai-kai main island area) can’t be more than a few hundred yards wide. another direct hit from a major storm(ivan/dennis-like or more powerful)& i’m finding it hard to imagination what will be left(other than the rotting blown out ruins of those high rise monstrosities on the east end).
hang in there. i enjoy your pics. it’s nice to see my island again w/new eyes. but if a big one comes, run.
thanks. dan jones
WOW !
Great pics. And to think Ike is not coming our way – he’s still showing his strength to us.
Navarre Beach is pretty water-logged too. I just thankful we are only feeling the effects of the storm surge.
Thanks again for taking the time to post these pictures.

I was out on the beach yesterday and I was truly awestruck by the size of the waves, 15 foot plus. They were breaking on the outer sandbars, 500-600 feet offshore.
The surf near shore boiled, and 30 mph winds sent sea foam flying like soapsuds. very alluring and frightening at the same time.
Yo Bud; Great pictures. Thank God you are not in the
way of this hurricane! What in the world have we done
to piss off mother nature like this. Did we attack
nations that are chicken to attack us so mother nature
is taking up the cause?
Those are some really excellent photos! And Dan Jones, I used to work w/ you at Shanahan’s years ago. Nice to “see” you!
Wow! I am amazed at how the beach behind the boardwalk wasn’t there in your pictures! I wouldn’t want to be a shop owner with those waves so close. Great pictures, just remember to keep safe
wow!!! these are some great pics… i have family members in pensacola (florida)….. i hope there safe!!! and i hope every1 else is to!!! that hurricane did horrible damaging!!!!
Great pictures–we are originally from Iowa but have lived in Gulf Breeze the last 10 years. Your blog came to me from a friend in Iowa–how ironic!
